Welcome

If your new to the world of Computing you perhaps may have overlooked some important things that will ensure you are using your computer safely and not risking your personal information and files.
The internet is rife with viruses, adware and nasty malware that is designed to steal your personal data, wreak havoc on your computer or make you pay out money for things you don’t need. This is why is it paramount you should have an effective anti-virus solution installed at all times.

It shouldn’t stop here though, you should also educate yourself on the best practices you should be doing whilst online and browsing the Internet. Sadly, the Internet can be a dangerous place and there are many unsavoury characters who will try and lure you into malware ridden sites!

This site was created to try and educate people on the dangers of viruses and also some of the best tactics they can use to stop themselves from getting them. There are so many different types nowadays that it can be a bit of a minefield. Some of the most common ones are key loggers and redirect viruses. A good example would be the Google redirect virus which is used to redirect search results to other rogue sites that might be used for Phishing or injecting malware.

What is Phishing? – Phishing is when a rogue user sets up a website designed to look identical to another website, usually one where you must logon (Like Facebook, your online banking site). In the background, the site will collect your user details if you were to enter them. These tactics are used to harvest accounts for spamming or, even worse, to steal your financial details.

Protecting Yourself – Having an anti-virus product on your computer is the first step, there are many out there you can use, some which are free and others which cost. It is hard to make a judgement sometimes since most of them offer the exact same thing. Two of my most popular free ones are Avast and Avira, both very effective and having high detection rates, they are capable of keeping you safe online.
This site will include details on where you can get these programs and also some tips on how you can stay safe online and ensure you don’t get redirected to sites which could harm your computer. Staying vigilant online is important as anti-virus programs cannot guarantee to be 100% effective. This is usually the case since hackers will create new strings of viruses, it can then take several weeks (or many months) for anti-virus vendors to come across them and add their signatures into their databases. For this reason you cannot solely rely on anti-virus alone, people often do this and then wonder how they ended up with a virus!
